Group of Cardmakers - Bleaching

Hi everyone, it's time for the Group of Cardmakers monthly technique. This month we are playing with some bleach either in the form of Kitchen bleach or water.

Here are some Videos for you to check out:
Using Bleach:
Coloring with Bleach - Jennifer McGuire (13:07)
Watercolour card with bleach - Andrea Kidman (6:16)

When using bleach remember to leave it dry thoroughly before painting over it otherwise it will pull the colour out of the new paint.
If some bleach does move out of the lines then just add a little water to your brush and re blend the ink around the area.
Bleach is also really helpful for removing colour if it has spread too far in your regular watercoloring. I find it's wonderful for those red seepages you really don't want 😂

Here are my examples of using bleach to remove colour.

My first card is a penny black stamp which has been heat embossed, the colour removed with Bleach and then re watercolored.

Card number 2 is a Carablelle stamp, sadly they're no long in business. I pulled the inky background from my stash, it was sprayed with ink sprays. I stamped the image and then used the bleach on the magpie.  Because the colour was so strong I did add a little white acrylic paint and then re stamped again.

For my third card, I used a Magenta Stamp on coloured card stock and stamped the image using bleach.  I poured a little bleach in saucer and used a folded piece of paper towel soaked with bleach to apply it to the stamp. You have to use a stamp positioned for this. The bleach pulled colour out of the card which gave a gold colour print. This does take a few attempts, you can watch the colour change and add more bleach where it's needed. I used pencils to colour the image. I think this is my favourite of all the cards, it looks so much nicer IRL.

My final card is a Magenta stamp  I smooshed different colours of blue ink on to the card then stamped and heat embossed the image. I removed the colour from the image using bleach and re coloured with water colours. I splattered some bleach over the background for interest.

I hope you get a chance to remove some colour and paint over your images either with bleach or water.

Four amazing cards Christine! I love all the different ways you've used bleach and other products. Your first card is such a beautiful image and you've really shown it off with this technique. LOVE the gorgeous birds and blooms with the wonderful smooshed background. Your second card really pops with the white on the duck. Using the bleach and then overpainting in white acrylic paint makes it stand out so much against the beautiful colours of your sprayed background. All your cards are lovely, but agree with you the third one is AMAZING. I love how the bleach changed the outline from the card colour to a golden colour. It's so beautiful against the deep red card base. Your colouring adds to much. And your third card is a beauty. Great work with this technique, Christine! xx

Your cards are simply amazing! I can't decide which one I like best. When I saw the first card, I fell in love with its colors and that amazing background. But when I got to the third, I was speechless. Using bleach as a stamping ink is simply brilliant. I'm wondering if bleach damages rubber stamps? Either way, the end result is worth the risk.

Wow, Christine! I love the dramatic images you used and the colors! While they are all dynamite, I love the blue-tinted white poinsettia hands-down! It looks like it is floating in outer space in the coolest way! Hugs, Darnell

These are so pretty. I love seeing all the techniques you use. I'm still getting ready to work on learning to watercolor. I bought all I needed, now just to try i. I think I'm afraid of failing so I haven't started yet. I'm always my own worst critic! I do so love seeing your projects, though!

Your first card dropped my jaw! I have had that stamp since last spring waiting to be colored and will definitely use it this year. But your example with the gorgeous background, sigh... Wow! All cards are beauties! Oooh, the background on your second card! Your poinsettia card is most definitely stunning, and interesting the technique you used. Stamp positioners have enabled all sorts of tricks. Making a note. Very cool how the bleaching left a gold outline. Lastly, the blue is as gorgeous as the rest, and the bleach splatters on the background give the most amazing starry effect. That's a must try. I'm inspired!

Amazing sample of cards! Masterful is what you are at the bleaching technique! Your colouring after the bleaching is beautiful.
And welcome back… I’m sure your UK visit was fun and fabulous. You’ll have to tell me all about it the next time we meet up. 😉

Brilliant cards using the bleaching technique Christine and each way and all so different too. I love the first two with the birds, and the second looks great adding some white acrylic to the bird which makes it really pop. The two magnolia themed ones are so pretty and who would have thought that the bleach added to the stamp would make the outline that pretty gold colour, and the shades of blue on the last are beautiful, and bleaching followed by watercolouring has worked really well, and the spattered bleach gives a lovely background effect. x
