Playing with Distress Oxide inks on Glossy Photo paper

Distress Oxide inks on Glossy Photo paper
Back in September while playing with some crafty friends I took along some glossy photo paper.  Now I should tell you I've had this paper since about 2002, it actually said manufactured in 2001.   I think we got a new printer and thought we would print out own pictures, little did we know the cost of the coloured ink for the ink jet printer would be ridiculously expensive so the paper got filed away.  I'm so glad I found it.

You can see the glossy surface

I inked my craft mat with Distress Oxide ink, spritzed it with water and then picked up the in ink on the photo paper, I heat set it after each layer, I wasn't impressed as the colours looked very chalky and rubbed off when I touched them.  After our crafting session I just dropped it in my bag and forgot about it.
Well a few weeks later I stumbled across this video on You Tube and realised I just missed one important step, I just need to wipe the surface with a baby wipe. What a transformation.
You can see in the photo below the area which is bright has been wiped the dull matte coloured portion hasn't.

I did a few samples with different coloured Distress Oxide Inks

I'm entering this for the following challenge

How intriguing your experiment is, Christine! Reading the process you found the right way was so interesting that I almost forgot about your beautiful card! :-D The Distress Oxide ocean background is so beautiful and dreamy on the glossy photo paper and the jelly fish has an awesome presence in the card. I love it! Hideko xx

This is really an interesting technique, Christine. It's amazing how removing the chalky film on top reveals these gorgeous and bright colours. Thanks so much for showing me this technique ... I had fun playing with it. Makes an amazing background for your sea image. Thanks for sharing with us at CAS Watercolour! xx

Fabulous backgrounds and I'd never have thought to use glossy photo paper. I have a lot of it here too but never had luck printing on it so it's just sitting here. Thanks for describing this technique. You really do come up with some fresh and new ideas!

Who would guess baby wipes would change your backgrounds to bright color? TFS your technique, Christine and beautiful card and backgrounds my friend. Hugs...

Thanks for sharing that handy tip. I too have glossy photo paper from way back so might just dig it out and play.

What wonderful backgrounds you created with the glossy paper and DOX inks - you can also spritz the panel with water to activate the inks - the water also seals the color I believe. Love that jelly fish stamp too! Julia xx

I can see I need to spend more time on the photo paper and DOX inks :)

The discovery of the correct way to do the technique sure made a huge difference - love the vibrancy of colour you got after using the baby wipe. A great background for your image!

Wow! Is that some of the paper you sent me? Thanks for the secret of making it gorgeous! A perfect background for this awesome jellyfish!

Hi Bonnie, this is actually printer glossy photo paper (card). I sent some coated card stock which does have a different finish when cleaned with baby wipes more matte than the photo paper.

How beautiful Christine and so satisfying to rub with the baby wipe and end up with such vibrancy, and I adore that VI jellyfish too. I have watched another video where someone did the same technique but she said she thought the wipe was just removing the chalky pigment part of the ink which is what makes it brighter but obviously am not sure if this is right or not, but nevertheless the result is stunning. x

So cool! Glad you figured it out and shared. I have tons of glossy cardstock and DOx inks I need to use. 😉

Hello Christine,
your background fits perfectly with the stamp. Great! Thank you for the hint, I did not suspect that DO can give such different effects on photographic paper. I wish you and your family a peaceful and joyful Christmas.
Hot hugs from Poland,
